Francisco Arques holds a PhD in Architecture and is Professor at the Department of Architectural Design. He has been Director of the International Centre for Cultural Heritage Studies CIESPC-UPM. He coordinated de Architectural Design Doctoral Program between 2008 and 2013.
He has been Professor Guest at different universities around the world: Valparaiso (Chile), École Polytechnique Fédérale Lausanne (EPFL), Escola Superior Artística do Porto (ESAP), Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino, amongst others. He obtained a scholarship to research at the Spanish Academy in Rome between 1991 and 1992.
His most recent projects are related to cultural landscape, and specially to mining and energy industry such as ‘The mining area of Puertollano (Ciudad Real): the post-industrial landscape’. Another highlight in this field is the curatorship, together with Juan Miguel Hernández León, of the exhibition ‘Designing America: Spain’s Imprint in the US’.
His scientific production is focused on the analysis of architectural and landscape heritage throughout the 20th century. His latest works include the book ‘La materia de la Arquitectura’ and various publications about the architect Miguel Fisac. His articles have been published in different magazines such as Arquitectura Viva, Ábaco, On Diseño, L’Architecture d’aujourd’hui, Cuadernos de Proyectos Arquitectónicos, Formas or Arquitectura.
