The need to improve the environmental conditions of cities and the need to achieve sustainable urban de-velopment have become short-term challenges, on which increasing the quality of life of citizens and pre-serving our environment depend, and it is so understood by the European Commission, whose initiatives and policies show more and more clearly its interest in everything concerning the urban environment.

This work does not aim to formulate a strategy or plan but just to help, even if it is in a modest way, improve the environmental quality of the city of Madrid and the quality of life of its citizens. It is a vegetation guide-book for the design of urban environments and it consists mainly of two parts: an analysis and subsequent proposal related to the ecological and landscape treatment of urban environments and a catalogue of species of trees and shrubs that may be used for said purpose.
